Airbnb offers chance to recreate trip from ‘Around the World in 80 Days’

Written by on 13/06/2019

Travellers are being offered the chance to replicate the adventures of fictional character Phileas Fogg and take a trip “Around the World in 80 Days” for an arguably affordable price.

The online marketplace, Airbnb, says some lucky people will get the opportunity to visit 18 countries in six continents.

Its vice president of experiences, Joe Zadeh, says the 12-week trip is designed to mirror the journey of the protagonist in the 1873 Jules Verne novel – which includes exploring the Galapagos Islands and hiking mountain ranges in Australia.

He said: “We thought that the notion of circumnavigating the globe and visiting all these different cultures and communities in 80 days is just a really fun and interesting premise.”

He added: “It encompasses the spirit of the new programme, focused on giving travellers an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else, especially for the price tag.

“We really want to make the point that adventures are accessibly priced”.

So exactly how much will this cost?

From 20 June, guests can book the trip of a lifetime, which includes all travel, accommodation, activities and meals – for £3,817 per person.

But the company has not revealed how many of the deals would be available.

It does however say that those accepted on the trip can expect to “explore the culture and traditions of medieval Europe, the former Soviet Union, eastern Africa, the Middle East, northern and southern Asia, the South Pacific, the Americas, and a Nordic island”.

Guests must make their own way to London, where the journey begins and ends, leaving on 1 September 2019.

They will use eight different modes of transport, including a hot air balloon.

The trip is to promote its Airbnb Adventures, which allows people to take part in 2-10 day treks, ranging from £62 to around £3,939 and is developed from its already available short trips called Airbnb Experiences.

Adventures are capped at 12 travellers or less.
