Accountant Jeffrey Bevan stole £50,000 from his own mother

An accountant who stole £1.8m from the Bermudan government will serve an extra 18 months in prison after filching a further £50,000 from his own mother.
Jeffrey Bevan, 51, told Lavinia Bevan, who has since passed away, that he would invest her life savings for her, but that was “not the case”, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
The scamming of his mother followed a period in Bermuda when he made 52 separate thefts over two years while working at the department of the accountant general.
He transferred £1.3m to UK bank accounts and paid off the mortgage on his house, invested in 11 properties and bought two Mercedes Benz cars, a court previously heard.
He also enjoyed family holidays to the Caribbean, the US and Europe, and attended Royal Ascot as a VIP.
Bevan, described as a “gambling addict”, made 18,853 bets online between 2008 and 2014, Paddy Power revealed.
He and his family returned to their home in Cwmbran, South Wales, in 2013, and that was when he asked his mother to write a cheque.
In a victim impact statement, his brother Jason said that if Lavinia Bevan was still alive, she would be “appalled with Jeff’s actions”.
Bevan, who was found guilty of theft, appeared via videolink from HMP Parc in Bridgend.
He was jailed for seven years and four months in February after admitting three counts of transferring criminal property and 10 counts of converting criminal property, regarding the cash laundered from Bermuda.
He was given a further 18 months in prison for stealing from his mother. The sentence will be served consecutively with the existing one.
Judge Michael Fitton QC told Bevan: “The account you gave to your brother was the money was going to be invested for your mother’s benefit, but that was not the case.
“You then lied to your brother about her being confused about certain aspects of the money.
“You misled family and rejected your familial relationships in a shocking manner.”
Martin Taylor, defending, said Bevan’s wife, Samantha, 53, and daughters, 14 and 17, are standing by him and visit him at HMP Parc.
