A592 roadworks, the next phase

Written by on 11/10/2022

Cumbria County Council is updating the residents and businesses about the next phases of work on the A592.

This road surfacing project is part of the Department for Transport’s (DfT’s) ‘Safer Roads Project’ on the A592.  Along with resurfacing the road, some footways will be resurfaced, and some kerbing will be renewed.

To minimise disruption, the work has been planned in five phases.

Phase 1 which was 1,100m in length has now been completed successfully. So far, we have used 800 ton of binder course and 760 ton of chippings to improve the road surface and footway as well as installing new kerbing, cleaning out gullies and setting new ironworks up.

Phase 2 will be taking place from 3-14 October, from the White Lion Inn to Patterdale Fire Station, this will include a full road closure and diversions routes will be:

NORTHBOUND  Travelling south on the A592 towards Windermere, then via the A591 (and a short section of the A593) through Ambleside, joining the A66 near Keswick and heading East towards the A5091 towards Dockray. This is approximately 47 miles.

SOUTHBOUND – Travelling north and onto the A5091 through Dockray, onto the A66 towards Keswick and then onto the A591 (and a short section of the A593) through Ambleside, re-joining the A592 at Windermere. This is approximately 47 miles.

Phase 3a will be taking place from 17 – 21 October, from Patterdale Estate Hall to Ullswater Steamers, this will include a full road closure and diversions routes will be:

NORTHBOUND – travelling south on the A592 towards Windermere, then via the A591 (and a short section of the A593) through Ambleside, joining the A66 near Keswick and heading East towards the A5091 towards Dockray. This is approximately 47 miles.

SOUTHBOUND Travelling north and onto the A5091 through Dockray, onto the A66 towards Keswick and then onto the A591 (and a short section of the A593) through Ambleside, re-joining the A592 at Windermere. This is approximately 47 miles.

There will be no works during the half term holidays, after Friday 21 October 2022 and restarting again on Monday 7 November 2022, the road will be open during this period (from Saturday 22 October to Sunday 6 November).

The county council are reminding residents and visitors that local businesses in Glenridding and Patterdale remain open, and access is available until 7 November.

For more information and to see the next phases, please visit the Safer Roads website.

Work will take place between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside of the working hours access will be maintained where possible, but vehicles do so at their own risk. The county council will make every effort to maintain access for residents. However, this may not be possible due to the narrowness of the road combined with the cooling times of the materials.  As a result, it may be necessary to delay, or at times, deny access to properties, depending on the location of the work operations.  Therefore, the county council are asking residents that any vehicles should be left outside of the works area.

Work will be closed for the festive period from 16 December, returning early January. It is anticipated that the full project will be completed by February 2023, weather dependent.

Cumbria County Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the highway network. Please accept the county council’s apologies for any inconvenience caused by these improvements.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:

“We understand that these works will be frustrating and disruptive for the community, and we do apologise for this; however, the repairs are necessary to prevent more deterioration on the A592.

“Having completed Phase one successfully, we are now moving on to Phases two and three.  The full schedule can be found on Safer Roads’ website, which is updated regularly, and includes a frequently asked question section too.

“We want to thank the local community for their support and also businesses for their co-operation and remind the community and visitors that businesses in Glenridding and Patterdale, can be accessed until 7 November.”
