Body found in search for man missing in River Thames in Cookham, Berkshire

Written by on 25/06/2020

A body has been found by police searching for a man missing in the River Thames after reports he got into difficulty while swimming.

Thames Valley Police said the man in his 30s was discovered after they were called to a stretch of water called Lulle Brook in Cookham, Berkshire, on Tuesday evening.

Officers had been searching the area after reports that two men had been swimming in the water and got into trouble.

One man in his 30s was brought to safety by a member of the public and was taken to a hospital where he remains in a serious condition, police said.

Officers, along with fire and ambulance crews, launched a search for the other man in an area of water between Odney Lane and Mill Lane, in Cookham, Maidenhead.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman on Wednesday said: “We regret to say that following extensive searches today, tragically the body of a man aged in his 30s was located at around 4.50pm.

“Formal identification has not yet taken place. His next of kin are being supported.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

As the search was under way, South Central Ambulance Service, which was at the scene, posted a message on Twitter to deny that three boys had drowned in the incident.

It said: “Reports of three boys having drowned in this incident are not correct.”
