Bodies found in search for men on speedboat off Scotland

Written by on 08/05/2017

The bodies of two men have been recovered after a speedboat went missing off the south-west of Scotland.

The Coastguard was first alerted when the men, aged 35 and 46, did not return to Port Logan in Dumfries and Galloway on Saturday evening.

Two helicopters and lifeboats searched the water overnight, but nothing was found.

Ten rescue teams joined the operation on Sunday, along with Police Scotland.

The men had set off from Port Logan at about 9am on Saturday morning. Their destination was unknown, but it is believed they were heading in the direction of Stranraer.

Inspector Stephen Bell of Dumfries and Galloway Police Division said: "Following a joint search operation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the RNLI and Police Scotland, we can confirm that the bodies of two men have been recovered from the west coast of the Irish Sea."

He said that, while the bodies are yet to be identified, police believe them to be those of the two missing men.

"Inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident."
