Search expanded for two men missing on speedboat off Scotland

Written by on 07/05/2017

A large-scale search is under way for two men who went missing on a speedboat trip off the southwest of Scotland.

The Coastguard was first alerted when the men, aged 35 and 46, did not return to Port Logan in Dumfries and Galloway on Saturday evening.

Two helicopters and lifeboats searched the water overnight, but nothing was found.

Ten rescue teams joined the operation on Sunday, along with Police Scotland.

The men had set off from Port Logan at about 9am on Saturday morning. Their destination is unknown, but it is believed they were heading in the direction of Stranraer.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: "The extensive search covering a carefully planned area based on the vessel’s known and projected movements continued through the night but nothing has been found.

"Resources have returned to station to refuel and swap crews, and the search has recommenced today."

Meanwhile, a search is under way in Wales for a man who was seen clinging to rocks at St David’s Head in Pembrokeshire on Saturday afternoon.

An extensive search along the shore, beach, rocks and cliff area was carried out until it went dark at about 9.30pm – and the operation resumed on Sunday morning.

Coastguard rescue teams, RNLI lifeboats, a search and rescue helicopter and Dfyed-Powys Police are involved.

Ieuan Williams, from the UK Coastguard, said: "The search continues but we’re also appealing for help from the community to find out who this man might be.

"If someone hasn’t returned from home or back to where they were staying, please can you contact the police or ourselves by dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard."
