Tesco recalls some Heinz baby food after metal fragments found in jar that was ‘tampered with’

Written by on 18/12/2019

Tesco customers are being urged to return a type of baby food after metal was discovered in a jar that had been tampered with.

The supermarket and Heinz are voluntarily recalling all jars of the 7+ months Heinz By Nature baby food range.

Earlier this week a jar of baby food was found to contain two sharp metal fragments inside.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) “only the jars in the 7+month range and purchased from Tesco are affected”.

The FSA said the same product and batch codes at other retail stores and in other packaging, such as in pouches, are not affected.

Signs announcing the recall will be on display in Tesco.

Which products are affected?

  • Heinz Cheesy Tomato Pasta Stars
  • Heinz Cottage Pie
  • Heinz Mango Chicken Curry
  • Heinz Sweet and Sour Chicken
  • Heinz Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Heinz Sunday Chicken Dinner
  • Heinz Pasta Bake with Tuna
  • Heinz Winter Veggies and Lamb

All are 200g and cover all best before dates.

The FSA said: “If you have bought any of the above products do not feed it to your baby. Instead, return it to the Tesco store from where it was bought for a full refund.”

In a joint statement on the recall notice, the supermarket and manufacturer said: “Tesco and Heinz apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”

There were no injuries as a result of the metal in the food and “the matter is being investigated by the relevant law enforcement agencies”, the statement said.

Earlier this year Cow&Gate recalled baby food sold at Asda, Tesco, and Boots after rubber was found in it.
