Man, 48, arrested after suspicious device found near polling station

A 48-year-old man has been arrested after a suspicious device was found near a polling station in Scotland.

Lanarkshire police said they had detained a man after the device was found on the ground floor of a block of flats at in the early hours of today.

A community room in the building was due to be used as a polling station.

Since the discovery, voters were redirected to a nearby school.

The non-viable device has been destroyed.

Chief Inspector Mark Leonard said: “Police in Motherwell have arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with a suspicious device found on the ground floor of Glen Tower flats, Motherwell around 1am on Thursday, 12 December, 2019.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

Resident Robert McCristall tweeted a picture of the police operation and said: “Looks out the window of the building where I live and there’s a “bomb disposal truck” Down below, and it’s also the polling station for the general election. Not sure if there’s a connection.”

On the North Lanarkshire Council website, an alert has been published saying: “The polling station at Glen Tower, Motherwell is not open today.

“Voters should go to the polling station at Knowetop Primary School, Knowetop Avenue, Motherwell. It is open until 10pm.”
