Jess Phillips: Man charged after disturbance outside MP’s office in Birmingham

A man has been charged after allegedly smashing the windows of MP Jess Phillips’ constituency office and shouting “fascist”.
Michael Roby, 36, was arrested after police officers were called to the Birmingham Yardley MP’s office in Yardley Road in Acocks Green, Birmingham, on Thursday afternoon.
He has been charged with a Section 5 public order offence and released on conditional bail, police said.
Roby, from Billesley in Birmingham, is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 10 October.
A sign in the windows of Ms Phillips office reads: “Sorry. We’re closed today on security advice. Surgery tonight has been cancelled.”
However Ms Phillips and her staff were still taking calls from members of the public inside.
The alleged attack on her office came as Boris Johnson was criticised for his use of “inflammatory” language, with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn saying the prime minister was encouraging people to act in “disgraceful and abusive” ways.
Ms Phillips said that while the prime minister “isn’t helping” she does not blame him, but added: “If he doesn’t change his strategy, I absolutely will.”
She was among the MPs to tell Mr Johnson to apologise for his language in the Commons, saying his choice of words had been designed to “inflame hatred and division”.
