A 24-year-old man has been stabbed to death at a Tube station in south London in what police said was a “shocking act of violence”.
He was wounded after a fight broke out between two groups of men at Elephant and Castle underground station around 11.30pm on Sunday.
The victim was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Another man, aged 25, was also hurt and he remains in a serious condition.
An eyewitness, Keylin Tejeda, 32, said one of the victims was a regular customer at her pattie shop El Monte.
She said: “I was coming from a restaurant with my partner around 11pm – and when we were passing by we saw him lying down. I could see who he was, I saw him.
“The ambulance were operating on him on the floor.”
A murder investigation is under way and Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn said officers were “working tirelessly to identify and trace those responsible”.
He added: “While the investigation is still at an early stage, at this time we believe there was an altercation between two groups of men inside the underground station – and it is here the victims sustained their injuries before making their way onto the street.
“We have a number of reassurance patrols in the area today so passengers can expect to see an increased police presence on their journey.”
It is the 92nd violent death in the capital so far in 2019.
In a tweet, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the man’s killing was a “senseless loss of a young life” – and urged witnesses to contact police or Crimestoppers.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder over the fight.
