UK weather forecast: Heavy downpours begin unsettled week of wind and rain

Written by on 12/08/2019

A yellow weather warning is in place for thunderstorms across some parts of the UK after heavy downpours marked the start of an “unsettled” week.

The Met Office says the yellow warning, which means severely bad weather is possible over the next few days, is in place for London and the South East after a weekend of stormy conditions.

A yellow warning for rain is also in place for the North West.

After today’s rainfall, temperatures will struggle to climb out of the teens for the rest of the week, as low pressure brings cooler, wetter weather.

Bonnie Diamond, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “This week there’s going to be a fresher feel, winds from the north bringing cooler temperatures than we’ve seen in a while.

“It’s going to be an unsettled week with periods of low pressure bringing rain and wind at times, especially on Wednesday and Friday.

“We’re looking at top temperatures in the high teens.”

She added: “There’s the possibility of up to 40-60mm of rain in just a couple of hours in some places.

“That’s some pretty heavy downpours.”

The yellow weather warning, which stretches from the Channel, westwards over Portsmouth, and north towards Essex, brings a possibility of localised flooding as well as travel disruption.

Tuesday may be more settled, but after that, the wet and windy weather will make a return into the middle of the week, with widespread showers across the country.

Ms Diamond explained: “Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, an area of low pressure is bringing a band of rain across the whole country.

“Wednesday is going to be a pretty wet day.”

The weekend’s windy and wet conditions meant travellers were hit by delays and disruption.

Ferry passengers heading into Dover were delayed by five hours as tug boats braved the weather to guide them into port.

In the North, flooded train tracks forced operators to cancel services between Cumbria and Scotland.

Services were also suspended between Penrith and Lockerbie due to the floods.
