British man, 62, dies after getting into trouble on hiking trip in Marbella

Written by on 12/08/2019

A British man has died in the Costa del Sol after getting into difficulties on a hiking trip.

The 62-year-old, who has not been identified, is understood to have suffered a fall and had become hooked by his backpack, Diario Sur reported.

It is believed he may have died after becoming suspended by the straps on the backpack.

The man was trying to reach the summit of the Pico de la Concha in Marbella when he set off on Saturday morning.

He raised the alarm in the afternoon with his family via WhatsApp saying that that he was in trouble.

A helicopter search was launched by a local mountain rescue crew, according to a local media report.

The helicopter search was called off at around 8.30pm due to lack of light, Diario Sur reported, but a team continued on foot.

The man was found dead at 9am on Sunday morning in a remote area of the Sierra Blanca mountain range.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Marbella and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Three other French hikers also suffered problems in the same area, and had to be rescued. One had heat stroke, but did not require hospital treatment.

Two women were also assisted after becoming lost in the area of Tolox.
