Pair charged over ‘security incident’ outside Arsenal player’s home

Written by on 11/08/2019

Two men in north London have been charged with public order offences in connection with a “security incident” involving an Arsenal player, police have said.

Ferhat Ercan, of Highgate, and Salaman Ekinci, of Tottenham, both 27, are due before magistrates in Highbury on 6 September.

They were arrested and charged after the incident outside the Camden home of midfielder Mesut Ozil last Thursday.

Arsenal announced on Friday that Ozil, 30, and defender Sead Kolasinac, 26, would not be in their squad for Sunday’s Premier League opener at Newcastle.

The club said the players had been withdrawn due to “further security incidents”.

Ozil and Kolasinac were targeted by carjackers in north London last month in a separate incident. Neither were harmed.

Arsenal’s statement on Friday read: “Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac will not be part of the squad for our opening match against Newcastle United following further security incidents which are being investigated by the police.

“The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority and we have taken this decision following discussion with the players and their representatives.

“We are liaising with the police and are providing the players and their families with ongoing support.

“We look forward to welcoming the players back to the squad as soon as possible.”
