Royal baby: Harry and Meghan reveal son to the world

Written by on 08/05/2019

The Duchess of Sussex has said she has “the two best guys in the world” as she and Prince Harry introduced their firstborn child to the world.

The couple later revealed that they had named the baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

They showed off their new son to waiting cameras inside St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle – the first time the family have been seen together since Meghan gave birth on Monday.

Beaming Harry carried the infant out for the press to see him, telling the sole reporter and handful of photographers present that the couple were “so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy”.

Meghan revealed that he will meet his great-grandparents the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh later, as well as grandmother Doria Ragland, who has flown into the UK from Los Angeles.

“It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing, and I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy,” the duchess said of her son, who was sleeping soundly, wrapped in a white blanket and wearing a delicate white knitted hat.

“He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm and has just been a dream. It’s been a special couple of days.”

Harry joked that his son has “already got a little bit of facial hair” as he spoke of his excitement at becoming a dad.

The Duke of Sussex said: “His looks are changing every single day.

“Parenting is amazing. It’s only been two or three days and we’re so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy.”

As for who he takes after, Meghan said the couple were “still trying to figure that out”.

Baby Sussex – believed to be the first mixed-race child born to a senior member of the Royal Family in centuries – is seventh in line to the throne.

Coming in ahead of him as it stands are his grandfather the Prince of Wales, his uncle the Duke of Cambridge, his three young cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, and his father Harry.

Despite the possibility that he does end up as monarch one day, the infant will not be made a prince unless his great-grandmother steps in.

According to Sky’s royal commentator Alastair Bruce, he will be Earl of Dumbarton.

“Under Peerage law, as the eldest son of the Duke of Sussex he holds by ‘courtesy’ the second title the Queen bestowed at the marriage, in Letters Patent under the Great Seal, which is an earldom,” he explained.

“Therefore, the infant is Earl of Dumbarton.”

The new royal was born in the early hours of Monday morning and has spent his time since then resting with his parents at their Frogmore Cottage home near Windsor castle.

His precise arrival time was 5.26am and he weighed 7lb 3oz – it made him slightly overdue, but his father said it had given him and Meghan “a little bit of time to think” about a name.

The couple have also posted a trio of pictures from the photo-call at St George’s Hall.

The birth came less than a year after Prince Harry married American former actress Meghan in a star-studded ceremony under the sunshine at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, became engaged after dating for 16 months after being set up on a blind date in London by a mutual friend.

Other members of the Royal Family have been sharing their joy since the birth of their son, with the Duke of Cambridge saying that he was “absolutely thrilled” and “looking forward to seeing them in the next few days”.

Prince William said on Tuesday: “I’m very pleased and glad to welcome my own brother into the sleep deprivation society that is parenting.”

That same day, the Prince of Wales – who is on a visit to Germany with the Duchess of Cornwall – said they “couldn’t be more delighted at the news” of his fourth grandchild.

There has also been plenty of excitement among the public since the birth, as there always is when the royal family welcomes a new baby.

Dedicated fans have been lining the streets of Windsor and some have even been camped out waiting for their first look at the youngster.
