England star Danny Rose ‘can’t wait’ to quit football because of racism

Written by on 05/04/2019

England star Danny Rose says he “just can’t wait to see the back of football” because of racism in the sport.

The 28-year-old, who was racially abused while playing against Montenegro last month, said the way authorities deal with racism is a “farce”.

He claimed the punishments for racist abuse are not harsh enough, with countries only getting fined “what I probably spend on a night out in London”.

“I have had enough,” he said. “At the minute, how I’ve programmed myself now, I just think that I’ve got five or six more years left in football and I just can’t wait to see the back of it, seeing how things are done in the game at the minute.”

He added: “There’s so many politics and whatever in football and I just can’t wait to see the back of it, to be honest.”

The Tottenham defender pointed out his manager Mauricio Pochettino had received a two-match ban for arguing with a referee, yet countries would “only get fined a little bit of money” for racism.

Montenegro have been charged with racist behaviour by UEFA after England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed his side would report chanting directed at players.

Southgate said he heard the abuse aimed at Rose after the player was handed a yellow card in the 93rd minute, while team mate Callum Hudson-Odoi claimed he heard monkey chants from fans.

Montenegro head coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic argued he did not hear racist chanting aimed at England players.

England star Raheem Sterling spoke out about the incident, calling for a stadium ban for Montenegro and questioning the effectiveness of fines.

He told Sky Sports News: “It’s now time for the people that are in charge to put a real stamp on it because you can fine someone but what’s that going to do?”

Rose said he expected to be racially abused during the match, after receiving abuse while playing for the England Under-21s team in Serbia several years ago.

“I’d sort of prepared myself anyway for what happened so I was fine. I prepared myself for it,” he said.

“We won and we’ll just wait for whatever punishment if any punishment happens, and just wait and see what happens.

“I wasn’t upset. I just didn’t want the focus to be on me.

“I have to say it was a very small minority out of the fans that were doing the chants so I didn’t want the post-match to be about me.”

European football regulations state that if fans exhibit racist behaviour then “the member association or club responsible is punished with a minimum of a partial stadium closure”.

The regulations also say additional disciplinary measures can be taken in some circumstances.
