Jaguar Land Rover recalls 44,000 cars over carbon dioxide levels

Britain’s biggest car maker Jaguar Land Rover is to recall more than 44,000 UK vehicles for repairs after regulators found ten models were emitting higher levels of carbon dioxide than expected.
The recall affects versions of the Discovery Sport, Discovery, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque plus the Jaguar XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and F-Type.
JLR will carry out the repairs free of charge on the models – certain two litre diesel or petrol cars made between 2016 and 2019 – once it has agreed a fix with the regulators.
The company said in a statement: “Affected vehicles do not consistently achieve the expected levels of CO2 emissions during the course of Conformity of Production (CoP) testing and as such are being rectified to ensure the correct CO2 performance is dependably achieved.
“The modifications made to affected vehicles will be made free of charge and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to the customer during the short time required for the work to be carried out.”
The recall, which was first reported by consumer group Which?, is to take place after findings by the Vehicle Certification Agency.
That prompted JLR to inform the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), which handles recalls and resulted in an alert issued by the European Commission.
Neil Barlow, DVSA head of vehicle engineering, said: “DVSA’s priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles. This includes vehicles that are damaging our environment.
“Where new vehicles sold for use on British roads don’t conform to emissions standards, DVSA will work with other government agencies and manufacturers to ensure the vehicles are fixed as quickly as possible.”
The recall comes after the company reported a £3.4bn quarterly loss amid a wider struggle for the global car industry and falling sales in China.
In January, it said it was cutting 4,500 jobs as part of a turnaround plan.
