Phil Mickelson secures three-shot win in Monday finish at Pebble

Written by on 12/02/2019

Phil Mickelson secured a record-equalling fifth AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after completing a three-shot victory on Monday.

Mickelson held a three-stroke lead with two holes remaining when play was suspended on Sunday evening due to fading light, with the five-time major champion returning to close out a seven-under 65 and finish on 19 under.

Paul Casey made a final-hole birdie to post a final-round 71 and finish runner-up, with Scott Stallings – who began the day as clubhouse leader – a further stroke back in third.

Mickelson was visibly disappointed not be able to complete his round on Sunday, but both he and Casey had calm and bright conditions when play resumed at 8am local time (4pm GMT).

Casey returned to knock in a four-foot putt to save par at the 16th and leave the pair separated by three heading to the par-three 17th, where both fired tee shots to within eight feet of the flag.

The Englishman went first and misjudged the break to run his effort past the left edge, while Mickelson also dragged his effort wide of the target to leave both players having to settle for pars.

Mickelson conservatively hit an iron off the 18th tee and elected to lay up with his second, before flicking a long iron to seven feet and rolling in the putt to close out his 44th PGA Tour victory.

Casey received relief from a sprinkler head after finishing just short of the green when attacking the par-five flag in two, before two-putting from the fringe for a closing birdie to finish on 16 under and in second spot.
