Virgil van Dijk back in Liverpool training but remains a doubt for Leicester game

Written by on 30/01/2019

Virgil van Dijk has returned to Liverpool training after illness but remains a doubt for Wednesday’s match against Leicester.

The centre-back has been ill since the club returned from a training camp in Dubai last week but was back on the pitch with the squad at Melwood on Monday and Tuesday.

His potential absence could come as a major blow to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who already has limited options in defence.

“Virg was a little bit ill but he trained yesterday. He will train today and then we will see,” said Klopp.

“Dejan (Lovren) is fine. Gini (Wijnaldum) trained. Fabinho will train today.

“Trent (Alexander-Arnold) is getting closer and closer, it looks all very positive but he will not be ready for tomorrow.”

Joe Gomez is also still a number of weeks away from a return as he continues his recovery from a lower leg fracture.

James Milner, meanwhile, is suspended after being sent off in the 4-3 win over Crystal Palace, while Joel Matip has played just one game since returning from a fractured collarbone.

Liverpool are also unable to call on Nathaniel Clyne after loaning the England international to Bournemouth earlier this month.

Klopp added: “You will have to wait until tomorrow. We will play with a right back. Or maybe a wing-back. I don’t know! I have no clue what we are doing to be honest.”
