For many children and students across the country, today is the first day back at school or university following the festive period.

And Clarence House has marked the return to books and homework with a throwback picture of Prince Charles during his university days in Cambridge.

In a black and white image taken in 1969 and shared on Twitter, the prince cycles across a bridge in the city.

He studied at the University of Cambridge between 1967 and 1970.

Prince Charles, who turned 70 in November, once revealed he was run over by a bus while cycling in the city.

Recalling his time at Trinity College and the crash, he said in 2016: “All I can tell you is that time goes past unbelievably quickly. But I enjoyed it enormously.

“If you look at the results now, as far as I’m concerned, quite how I survived being run over by a bus when I was on a bicycle just outside here I don’t know.”

Prince Charles began his degree studying archaeology and physical and social anthropology, but switched to history in his second year and graduated with a 2:2.
