Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe underwent a medical with Rangers on Saturday ahead of completing an 18-month loan deal, according to Sky sources.
Defoe had his medical in Manchester after agreeing personal terms with the Scottish Premiership club earlier this week.
It is hoped Defoe will become a Rangers player in time to join the squad on their mid-season break to Tenerife.
Rangers are also hopeful of completing a deal to bring Steven Davis back to Ibrox, with the midfielder set for a medical after holding talks with the club.
Despite early talk of a permanent move, it is understood the Northern Ireland captain, who has six months remaining on his St Mary’s contract, is now more likely to join on loan, also.
Davis spent four years at Rangers and was part of the club’s last title-winning side in the 2010/11 season.
