The Hornets (18-19) sit seventh in the Eastern Conference but remain one of the league’s most inconsistent teams, routinely alternating wins and defeats. They lost six of their last 10 games and opened the new year with an embarrassing 122-84 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Charlotte’s franchise star Kemba Walker led the NBA in scoring earlier in the season. He is currently averaging 25.4 points per game and has five 40+ point performances in this campaign, including a 47-point outing in the Hornet’s December 30 loss to the Washington Wizards.
The high-flying Nuggets (25-11) lead the Western Conference and have maintained their strong form after equalling their best 30-game start (21-9) to a season in their history. They have won four successive games and eight of their last 10.
Denver’s star center Nikola Jokic sits on the fringes of the MVP conversation thanks to his excellent all-round offensive game but the team’s success is ultimately due to their roster depth.
The emergence of young players Monte Morris and Malik Beasley enabled the Nuggets to not only overcome injuries to established stars Paul Millsap, Gary Harris and Will Barton, but continue to thrive in the upper echelons of the West.
