A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving offences after two teenagers were killed in a car crash near Lincoln.
The teenagers – a man and a woman who were both 19 – were found dead in the early hours of this morning on the Lincoln bypass, where two cars had collided.
A 26-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, providing a positive breath test and leaving the scene of a collision, Lincolnshire Police said.
A white Citroen C3 allegedly left the scene following the fatal crash, officers said. The teenagers had been travelling in a blue Ford Mondeo
Emergency services were called to the bypass at 12.50am, three days before Christmas Day.
A police spokesperson said: “We have traced the immediate family of the victims and broken this desperately sad news to them.
“Anyone who was on the bypass between the Carholme and Skellingthorpe roundabouts between about 12.30am and 12.50am and saw either the white Citroen C3 or the blue Mondeo estate before the collision, or saw the collision itself, is asked to contact police on 101.
“The police investigation at the scene has been completed and the road is now re-open.”
Lincolnshire Police have warned in recent days of the danger of drink and drug driving, with the force promising a “significant increase” in the targeting of offences during December.
As part of the campaign, John Siddle from the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership said: “We would remind all drivers of their responsibility when driving, to drive a motor vehicle whilst impaired through drink or drugs puts everyone at risk.
“We all have an expectation to arrive home safely and too many families have had their lives blighted by the spectre of drink and drug drivers; for those that survive, their lives are often changed forever.”
