A ‘well-mannered’ wedding – not ‘bonkers’ like Harry and Meghan’s big day

Compared to Harry and Meghan’s shindig back in May, it was calmer in Windsor when Eugenie married Jack – a little subdued perhaps, and certainly windier.

But the wedding of a prince who is sixth in line to the throne to a glamorous American actress was always going to be a tough act to follow.

Eugenie’s nuptials were “well-mannered”, a member of the choir said – unlike Prince Harry’s, which had been “bonkers”.

For royal watchers and royal fans, however, Eugenie’s day was no less special.

Enjoying a leisurely morning, sisters Cathy Ravenstein and Chris West had time for breakfast and coffee before claiming their viewing position – very different to the 5am start on Windsor’s Long Walk when Harry married Meghan.

And for some, it was a chance to experience what they had missed at the last wedding.

Seven-year-old Sienna from London – who wanted Eugenie’s dress to be pink with puffy sleeves – missed the event in May because she was in a ballet.

“I promised next wedding we would come,” the youngster’s mother Nirit said.

Kim Russell and Karen Levet from Ely in Cambridgeshire were worried they would not be able to make it to a royal wedding after Harry finally tied the knot, and so made sure they were there when Eugenie made her vows.

Summing up the atmosphere, royal watcher John Loughrey said: “It’s a Windsor affair, not like Harry and Meghan which was global.”

Many of those who had got tickets in the ballot seemed to be from a small radius – coming from Old Windsor, Basingstoke and Ascot, for example.

But there were also guests from Canada, like Sandra Conlon who made the trip just for the wedding.

And Abby Sylvia and Amy Riebel, who planned a European holiday based around being in Windsor on the big day.

Those lining the streets were unlikely to be royal sceptics, though one watcher was overheard saying that spotting Jeremy Paxman had been the most exciting part of her day.

Jack and Eugenie commemorative scarves were hardly flying off the shelves – the shops still full of Harry and Meghan memorabilia.

But the crowds went wild when they emerged in their carriage, some even dashing to catch a second glimpse further down the road.

While Eugenie may not be a “working royal”, it could still be counted as a good day at the office.
