Cardiff man charged with terror and explosives offences after raid

Written by on 02/09/2018

A man has been charged with explosive and terror offences in Cardiff.

Edward John Harris was arrested after a raid which followed reports of explosive materials at his home on Archer Crescent in Ely.

Counter-terror police have said there is no evidence of a specific terror threat to the Welsh capital.

Harris, 27, appeared Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, charged with making or possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or property, and possessing terrorist documents.

The court heard that two explosive substances – hexamethylene triperoxide diamine and triacetone triperoxide – were found at his home, along with the Improvised Munitions Handbook – an explosives manual.

During his brief court appearance Harris spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and nationality of “white British”.

A second suspect remains in police custody and will be questioned.

“Our investigation continues but we must stress that there is no evidence to suggest any specific terrorist threat against Cardiff or that people in Cardiff are at any greater risk,” Detective Superintendent Jim Hall, head of the Wales extremism and counter terrorism unit, said.

“However, we would remind people to remain vigilant and report any suspicions to the police.”
