A four-year-old Italian boy was among five people killed in a collision between a minibus and a car.
It happened on the A96 between Huntly and Keith in Moray just before midnight, Police Scotland said.
The white Fiat minibus was carrying a group of Italian tourists, with a woman and a young boy being among those who died.
Three passengers in the Nissan X-Trail car, two women aged 69 and 70 and a 63-year-old man, were also killed.
Richard Lochhead, a Scottish National Party MSP for Moray, tweeted: “So sorry to hear about such an awful tragedy locally.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected and thanks to emergency services. Community will be shocked by this sad news.”
He said the A96 was one of Scotland’s busiest roads and the loss of life was “difficult to take in”.
Five others including a three-year-old Italian boy and two adult passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital with a “variety of injuries”.
The woman is said to be in a critical condition at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary while the child suffered minor injuries.
The 39-year-old female driver of the Nissan X-Trail suffered life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Dr Grays hospital in Elgin.
The four people travelling in the car were from the local area, police said.
A section of the road has been closed and diversions put in place.
An investigation has been launched and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information.
Sergeant Peter Henderson said: “Motorists are thanked for their patience at this time and we would urge anyone who was in the area last night leading up to the incident at around 11.50pm to please get in touch as our enquiries at the scene continue.
“Please quote ref. no. 5002 of July 26.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident at this very sad time.”
Road Policing Superintendent Louise Blakelock said the “dreadful scene” faced by emergency workers was both “distressing and extremely challenging for everyone involved”.
