Anonymous chocolate thief says sorry with £5 note after 43 years

Written by on 15/07/2018

A guilty shoplifter has apologised for pinching two chocolate bars from a Woolworths store more than 40 years ago.

An anonymous handwritten apology letter containing a £5 note was sent to the Belle Vale Shopping Centre in Liverpool, much to the surprise of staff.

It read: “I stole two bars of chocolate from Woolworths in your shopping centre in 1975, when I was a little boy.

“I apologise, I didn’t know any better here’s the money I owe you for them.”

The shopping centre shared a picture of the letter and money onto Twitter on Friday with the words: “Restoring our faith in humanity. Thank you.”

Since Woolworths is no longer in business, the money will be donated to the centre’s chosen charity – Zoe’s Place baby hospice.

A spokesman said: “In a time of division, it is great to see an act of kindness that restores faith in humanity,” reports the Liverpool Echo.

“Belle Vale Shopping Centre wants to thank the sender and acknowledge his apology. It is a positive message that is worth sharing to encourage all to be kind.”

This month it emerged that a man in the US paid a parking ticket 44 years after he got it.
