Britain’s Zharnel Hughes runs 100m in 9.91 seconds to set new 2018 best

British sprinter Zharnel Hughes ran the fastest 100m time in the world this year with a 9.91-second sprint at the Racers Grand Prix 2018 in Jamaica.
Hughes, 22, went under 10 seconds for the first time in his career and later claimed he could have gone even quicker had he not had a problem with his starting blocks at the beginning of the race.
He started behind Jamaica’s Yohan Blake but overtook his rival on his way to recording a personal-best time.
American Noah Lyles finished second with his personal best of 9.93, while Blake came in third with a time of 10.00.
Hughes said: “It was a great race.
“Unfortunately, my blocks slipped when I pushed off so it hampered my start a little bit.
“But I am in great form so I regained my composure and just relaxed while maintaining my phases and I came through successfully.”
Hughes had previously recorded a winning 100m time of 9.99 at the Boston Games earlier this year but that time was discounted from the record books because of a 2.4m/second tailwind.
He moves to equal second on the British all-time list behind 1992 Olympic champion Linford Christie (9.87), with the same time as James Dasaolu.
