Michael O’Neill’s future as Northern Ireland manager is expected to be
resolved in the next 48 hours, according to Sky sources.
Sky Sports News has learned that a decision between staying with Northern Ireland, or taking the Scotland job, will be made before the Nations League draw in Switzerland on Wednesday.
Neill and the Scottish Football Association (SFA) met on Thursday to discuss the 48-year-old taking over from Gordon Strachan, who was sacked as Scotland boss in October.
The meeting, described as “productive”, was the first time the two parties have met, and O’Neill is understood to have impressed the SFA delegation – believed to be the president Alan McRae and the chief executive Stewart Regan.
O’Neill must choose between the SFA’s offer to make him Scotland’s highest paid manager and the Irish Football Association’s (IFA) improved package worth around £4m until 2024.
The Irish boss was given permission to speak to the SFA in November and a £500,000 compensation package is thought to have been agreed between the SFA and the IFA.
The former Newcastle midfielder is currently booked on a flight to Switzerland with the Irish Football Association delegation this week ahead of Wednesday’s draw.
