Manchester City reveal Gabriel Jesus has suffered MCL injury

Written by on 02/01/2018

Manchester City have announced that Gabriel Jesus suffered a medial collateral ligament injury during Sunday’s draw at Crystal Palace.

But Jesus himself revealed on Instagram that he is not likely to require an operation.

The Brazilian forward had to be taken off in tears after 23 minutes of the goalless draw at Selhurst Park, having suffered a knee injury.

And the club said in a statement on Monday: “Manchester City can confirm Gabriel Jesus suffered a medial collateral ligament injury during the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

“He will undergo further examinations in the coming days to establish the extent of his lay-off.

“We wish Gabriel a speedy recovery and we will keep you updated on his progress via the club’s official channels.”

Mild MCL injuries generally heal within three to six weeks but more severe injuries can sideline players for up to 12 weeks.

But Jesus himself is hopeful and wrote on Instagram on Monday night: “Today I went through an image exam on my left knee that diagnosed a small medial collateral ligament injury.

“Thank God it is not very bad and I won’t have to go through any surgery procedure. Promise to be back as soon as possible.

“Thanks for all the support and positive thoughts, happy new year!

“2018 is going to be my year!”

It is another injury blow for Jesus, who was unavailable for two months shortly after joining City last year due to a fractured metatarsal.

And it comes at a poor time for City with playmaker Kevin De Bruyne facing a spell on the sidelines after he also picked up an injury at Selhurst Park.

Guardiola’s side have enjoyed a superb season so far and are 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with a game in hand, ahead of Watford’s visit on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old Jesus has been sharing the striking duties with Sergio Aguero and has bagged 12 goals in all competitions so far this term.
