Championship round-up: Chris Coleman steers Sunderland to victory
Written by News on 26/11/2017
Chris Coleman secured his first win as Sunderland manager as they beat Burton to lift themselves off the bottom of the Championship table.
Coleman quit Wales last weekend to take over the stricken Stadium of Light club and had little time to work with the players ahead of a midweek defeat to Aston Villa. But more work on the training ground bore fruit at the Pirelli Stadium as James Vaughan’s 84th-minute goal and a second from George Honeyman (88) earned a 2-0 win.
At the other end of the table, leaders Wolves show no sign of letting up after dispatching Bolton 5-1. In-form Aston Villa won again, seeing off Ipswich 2-0 to keep in the automatic promotion hunt as Albert Adomah scored twice.
Derby leapfrogged Middlesbrough into the play-off positions as they crushed their hosts 3-0 at the Riverside as Matej Vydra scored a hat-trick. Leeds bounced back from their midweek loss at Wolves to win at Barnsley – one of their bogey grounds. United have regularly lost at Oakwell but bucked the trend, Samuel Saiz and Gjanni Alioski scoring first-half goals in a 2-0 win.
Norwich’s winless run extended to seven as Preston, led by former City boss Alex Neil, came back to draw 1-1. The pressure remains firmly on Hull boss Leonid Slutsky after they squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at home to Bristol City.
Oliver Norwood’s penalty saw Fulham beat Millwall 1-0 and Reading drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday. Sheffield United drew 1-1 with Birmingham in the late game.
