Mayweather vs McGregor: Floyd Mayweather suggests Conor McGregor will enter retirement after fight

Written by on 26/08/2017

Floyd Mayweather played down concerns about the size difference with Conor McGregor and vowed to send the UFC star into retirement.

The 40-year-old American was more than three pounds lighter than McGregor as both fighters made the 154lbs light-middleweight limit at the weigh-in for this weekend’s Las Vegas showdown, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

But Mayweather was not worried about McGregor’s apparent weight advantage as the five-weight world champion believes his vast experience will prove crucial.

"I’ve been here before. I know what it takes when it’s a fight of this magnitude," said Mayweather, who weighed 149.5lbs with McGregor coming in at 153lbs.

"Weight doesn’t win fights, fighting wins fights."

Mayweather is approaching his 50th and final bout, but insists the Irishman will also be forced to consider the end of his own career after suffering a stoppage defeat.

"It won’t go the distance, mark my words," said Mayweather. "I’m not really worried about the scale, or the last time, this will be Conor McGregor’s last fight also.

"The fans can’t fight for you. It comes down to the two competitors. The fans cannot fight for you. Forty-nine times I went out there, it was one on one."

Amir Khan claims "boxing will be over" if the self-proclaimed Best Ever fails to deal with a ring novice, and it was put to Mayweather that the sport’s credibility is in his hands.

He told Sky Sports News: "Boxing is legendary, boxing will always be here. MMA is a hell of a sport, just like boxing is a hell of a sport. Both are combat sports, but boxing is legendary."

Watch Mayweather vs McGregor, from the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, from midnight August 26, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Book via your Sky remote or online here.
