Runaway bus in St Helens smashes into cars before ploughing into garden
Written by News on 24/08/2017
A bus careered out of control into two cars before ploughing into the front garden of a semi-detached house taking one of the vehicles with it.
The force of the impact left one of the cars on top of a wall and the front of the single-decker several several feet off the ground.
Police were called to the scene in St Helens on Merseyside at 8.25am.
It is thought the bus driver, who was taken to hospital following the incident, may have collapsed at the wheel.
There were no passengers on board at the time and no one else is believed to have been injured.
Witness Phil Gadd told Sky News he and his seven-year-old daughter "were sitting in car park when we heard a loud bang".
He said: "Then a bus appeared hitting a car then hitting a stationary car 20ft away.
"Initially I jumped out to try and stop the bus, thinking it was stolen."
Mr Gadd added: "The bus continued pushing the vehicle over the road and over a wall.
"As myself and a few other men tried to get into the bus, we realised the driver was in severe distress and managed to open the doors."
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "It is believed that the driver of the bus may have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision and has been taken to hospital.
"There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the incident and nobody else is believed to have been injured.
"An investigation is currently under way."
