COVID-19: UK records another 608 coronavirus deaths – the highest daily total since May

The UK has recorded another 11,299 coronavirus cases and 608 related deaths in the past 24 hours – the highest daily total for deaths since 12 May.
The number of cases are down on the 15,450 recorded on Monday but the number of deaths are up on 206 recorded on Monday.
The latest statistics come on the day it was also revealed that the number of deaths in England and Wales up to 13 November, was the highest weekly total since the end of May.
And the figures emerged as the parents of a 10-year-old boy, who is thought to be one of the UK’s youngest victims of coronavirus, spoke of their “indescribable” pain following his death.
The total number of deaths of people within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19, is now 55,838.
But separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where COVID-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been more than 71,000 deaths involving COVID-19 in the UK.
The government said that, as of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 11,299 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 1,538,794.
Meanwhile, news emerged of Fehzan Jamil, from Bradford, who had a number of underlying health issues, including epilepsy, and died in hospital after contracting the disease before being laid to rest on Monday.
It is unclear whether he was among those recorded as having died in the latest government figures.
Speaking to Channel 4 News, his parents, Tayyaba and Mohammed Jamil, described their son as a “really brave fighter” and “soldier”, who was a cheerful boy despite his health problems.
In an interview broadcast on Tuesday evening, his father Mohammed said: “There were four of us, now there are only three. The pain is indescribable.”
His mother Tayyaba added: “I just can’t describe our loss. Everything feels empty now.”
On Thursday, people in England will find out which tier they are being placed in once the lockdown ends on December 2.
More regions than before the lockdown are expected to face Tier 2 or Tier 3 restrictions. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has admitted the rules were not stringent enough first time around.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his winter plan for tackling coronavirus in the months leading to spring.
He said it was hoped the rollout of a vaccine would signal that life could go back to “normal” by Easter.
