Snickers bar to return to its old Marathon name to mark 30 years

Written by on 15/09/2019

Marathon chocolate bars will return almost 30 years after being renamed Snickers.

The nut-packed snack will be called Marathon once more in Morrisons, but only for three months.

Marathon bars, as they were known in the UK, were renamed Snickers in 1990 because Mars wanted to be consistent around the world.

The name has now been re-registered as a UK trademark.

Mars says the Marathon bars will still use the same recipe as Snickers, so there will be no changes to the product.

Gemma Buggins, brand director, said: “Bringing the Marathon bar branding back for a limited time really was a no brainer.

“It’s a great way to celebrate over 85 years of Mars making chocolate in the UK and we hope this serves as a wonderful treat for fans of Snickers who remember when it was called Marathon.”

It is not the first time Mars has given re-branded sweets their old name – in 2008 Starburst chews temporarily went back to being called Opal Fruits.
