Joey Barton denies assaulting former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel

Written by on 09/10/2019

Joey Barton has denied assaulting former Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel in the players’ tunnel after a football match on 13 April.

Barton, who manages Fleetwood Town, is alleged to have pushed the German coach at Barnsley’s stadium, leaving him with a damaged tooth.

The former Manchester City and Newcastle player indicated he would plead not guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm during a hearing at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court.

District judge Joanne Hirst said the allegations were too serious to be dealt with by magistrates and sent the case to Sheffield Crown Court for a jury trial.

Barton, 37, spoke only to give his name, date of birth, his address in Widnes, Cheshire, confirm he was British and indicate his plea.

The alleged incident happened after a League One match that Barton’s team lost 4-2.

Barton was given unconditional bail and will next appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 6 November.
