Boom boom! Basil Brush takes adult-only show to Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Written by on 16/04/2019

Basil Brush, the beloved TV puppet, is to make his debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a “no holds barred” adult-only show.

In a break from fronting children’s shows and appearing on light entertainment programmes, Basil’s new show promises a “unique comedic take on everything from Love Island to Westminster” delivered in his “trademark anarchic style”.

Speaking to Sky News, the puppet fox’s team said: “In recent years, Basil has made multiple appearances on some of the biggest comedy entertainment shows on TV today.

“And every time he appears we have been inundated with messages from the now-adult fans saying how much they’ve loved those appearances.

“What’s unique about Basil is he literally has spanned the generations; from those who watched him back in the 1970s, to the current bunch of 20-somethings who tuned in at the turn of the millennium.

“It was evident there was a real appetite to see more of him in these prime time roles, so we thought: ‘What better place to do that than the world’s biggest arts festival?'”

The team added they had been considering taking Basil to the Fringe “for a while now” and 2019 “just felt like the year”.

Ahead of his Edinburgh stint, Basil himself told Sky News: “I would like to bring out the inner child in everyone whether young, old or middle aged; and hope someone will take me up the Trossachs while there – I’ve never been there before!

“Ha ha, boom, boom!”

Despite “Basil Brush Unleashed” being aimed at adults, Basil’s team allayed any fears of explicit language.

They said he is “too sophisticated for cheap laughs through loads of swearing and – as Basil reminded us – he is colour blind, so doesn’t know what ‘blue’ means, boom, boom!”.

As well as his adult show, Basil will also perform a family-friendly show during afternoons.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes place every August in the Scottish capital, with acts from around the world performing for the event’s millions of visitors.

Basil’s show will take place nightly at the Underbelly Cowbarn from 6.45pm throughout the festival.
