Martin O’Neill takes charge at Nottingham Forest

Written by on 15/01/2019

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Martin O’Neill as their new manager.

The 66-year-old boss returns to the club he served with as a player, winning the European Cup and making 371 appearances.

Forest parted company with Aitor Karanka last week, and O’Neill becomes their 11th manager since June 2011.

His first game in charge will be on Saturday, when Bristol City will visit the City Ground.

A Forest statement read: “One of the original and most-loved ‘Miracle Men’, Martin is finally realising a life-long dream in managing his beloved Nottingham Forest.

“With his commitment to the club, knowledge of the game and passion to succeed, O’Neill will be aiming to take the club back into the top flight of English football and make the miracle happen again.”

O’Neill played for the great Brian Clough during his Forest days and has gone on to enjoy notable managerial success himself.

However, he has been out of day-to-day club management since 2013, having followed his departure from a stint at Sunderland with a spell in charge of the Republic of Ireland.

O’Neill takes charge of Forest with the club sitting ninth in the second division, four points outside the play-off places – and the length of his contract has not been disclosed.
