A man who says he bought an expensive stolen bike for just £80 before tracking down its owner and returning it has earned praise from rapper Stormzy.

Ste Burke posted a picture of the mountain bike on Twitter on Monday, saying it had a bike lock on it and was apparently stolen from the Crosby area in Liverpool.

“Bought it so I can get it back to the right owner,” he wrote.

“I know it’s a £1,350 bike and I’d be heartbroken if it was me. Give us a shout.”

A few hours later he said a man sent him a private message “and it ended up being the fellas who’s bike it was [sic]”.

Mr Burke said the man had the key to the lock and the bike’s paperwork.

The bike’s owner explained that he had saved up £1,250 to buy it last year and was devastated when his house had been burgled.

“He’s made up that he’s managed to get his bike back, so happy days,” Mr Burke said.

“It’s in the right hands now.”

After seeing Mr Burke’s tweet, grime artist Stormzy tweeted him back with strong arm and heart emojis, saying: “Top man.”

Mr Burke told LBC that three men approached him asking if he wanted to buy a bike and when he quickly realised it was expensive he said he would buy it for £80.

He said he questioned them over the attached bike lock and they told him it had been stolen from Crosby so he decided he should buy it and put a photo on social media to find its owner.

Mr Burke added that the owner has offered to pay him but he feels bad that his house got burgled so does not think he will accept the money.
