It’s a classic tale retold for a modern audience, but one Little Women fan has spotted items that are a touch too modern for her liking.

Superfan Madelyn Rancourt, who’s watched the movie multiple times, caught sight of a travel mug and water bottle in the background of one of the movie’s key scenes.

Sharing her discovery via the social networking site TikTok, she asked fellow Little Women lovers: “Anyone else notice this?”

In the short video, Rancourt talks about how many times she’s seen the film and how big a fan she is, then says says: “I don’t know if anyone else noticed but there is a Hydro Flask and a Poland Spring water bottle just casually sitting there during some of the scene.”

She pauses the scene which takes place inside the March family house, zooming in on the flask and bottle sat on top of furniture in the background.

Greta Gerwig remade the classic American coming-of-age tale last year.

Based on the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott, action in the film takes place in the 1860s.

Fans were quick to respond, with many watching the digitally available film back to verify the continuity error themselves.

Some joked that director Gerwig may have intentionally slipped in the modern references to remind the audience of modern parallels in the historic film.

A host of memes have also sprung up around the gaffe.

In a second TikTok video, Rancourt also noted that Gerwig, and cast members Timothee Chalamet, Laura Dern and Saoirse Ronan, discussed the scene in an interview with Vanity Fair, but made no mention of the bottles.

It’s not the first big screen continuity cock up to have been spotted by sharp-eyed fans.

Last summer, Game Of Thrones enthusiasts caught sight of a rogue disposable coffee cup on a table in Winterfell during the show’s final series.

The continuity clanger appeared in episode four, The Last Of The Starks, during a boozy drinking party attended by Daenerys Targaryen.

While the the takeaway cup was from originally believed to be from Starbucks, it was later identified as being from a local coffee-seller close to the filming venue.
