It wasn’t me: Shaggy says internet scammers are impersonating him

Reggae star Shaggy has had to tell fans “it wasn’t me” after claiming that internet scammers have been posing as him online.
The 50-year-old warned in an Instagram post that fake accounts purporting to be him were “hitting up fans for money”, saying they “owe [him] something”.
Having allegedly caught the scammers red-handed, the star wrote: “I would like to make it clear that these are nothing more than an internet scam.
“They are not from me nor do they represent me in any way.”
Shaggy added: “It saddens me that this has become our reality & that innocent people are being dragged in to this ridiculousness.
“My best advice is to please not engage with these fake accounts.”
He concluded his post by thanking fans, writing “one love”.

The star, who had a hit with the 2000 song It Wasn’t Me, isn’t the first musician to have his identity used in scams.
Earlier this year, rapper Cardi B shared an email on her Instagram account which had been flagged up to her by a fan and appeared to show a scammer posing as the star.
The email asked recipients to donate money towards autism research – however it was sent from an email address using Cardi B’s name and was littered with spelling errors and typos.
The I Like It singer wrote: “THIS S*** IS FAKE ! FAKE DONATION S***! Ya wild disgusting taking advantage of real kind people who wanna make a change but ya scamming!
“If it don’t come from my mouth don’t believe it !”
