The 25-year-old former One Direction star was said to have been in talks with Disney over starring in a live-action remake of the film.

But a source close to Styles has confirmed to the Press Association that he has decided not to take the role.

Styles made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film Dunkirk and reportedly auditioned for the role of Elvis Presley in an upcoming biopic of the singer. The part went to US actor Austin Butler.

Disney has been approached for a comment.

Singer Halle Bailey will play Ariel in the film, which is set to begin production in early 2020 and will be directed by Rob Marshall.

Disney said that 19-year-old Bailey, part of musical duo Chloe X Halle with her sister Chloe, was chosen after an “extensive search”.

The film will feature songs from the 1989 animated original, by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as new songs by Menken (music) and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda (lyrics).

Marshall will also produce the film alongside John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Miranda.
