When a young Brian Wilson first submitted Beach Boys’ debut single Surfin’ to his high-school teacher, he got an F.

On Tuesday, nearly 60 years later, the new director of California’s Hawthorne High School invited the singer to receive a revision for his failed grade.

Wilson shared photos of the event on his Twitter page, featuring one holding the revised diploma with the director, Dr Vanessa Landesfeind, at his side.

Dr Landesfeind gave Wilson an A for the song, and shared a quote from his former teacher, responsible for flunking the single.

“Brian wrote a composition for me and it turned out to be ‘Surfin,” Fred Morgan said.

“That composition got an F, but it made a million dollars.”

Surfin’ was recorded by the Beach Boys in 1961, two years after Wilson submitted it in high school.

It was released a month later, becoming the band’s first national hit.

Brian Wilson just recently finished touring with his 1966 classic album Pet Sounds and says he has “no plans to retire soon”.
