The writer whose life inspired hit Netflix series Unorthodox says the ultra-orthodox Jewish community she grew up in couldn’t react quickly enough to COVID-19 because of its herd mentality.

Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots is the basis for the mini-series about a woman who flees an arranged marriage.

She joined Dermot Murnaghan on the Sky News Daily podcast to discuss the changes she has gone through since moving to Berlin in 2014.

The 33-year-old said since moving from New York to the German capital, she has learned that you can “consistently honour the past without ever forgetting or ignoring it, while also be in the present moment”.
