Claire Foy and Matt Smith are to reprise their roles in hit play Lungs, performing in an empty Old Vic theatre due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The stars of The Crown debuted at the iconic London venue last year, which describes the show as a “hilarious emotional rollercoaster” about a couple wrestling with the dilemmas of the planet.

The actors will return in June for several live performances that will be streamed to an audience at home because of COVID-19.

Up to 1,000 people – the capacity of the venue – will be able to watch the staging of Duncan MacMillan’s play, paying normal prices of between £10 – £65.

It will be part of Old Vic: In Camera, a project trying to revive the theatre’s revenue, which was wiped out by the coroanvirus crisis, and will include a series of rehearsed play-readings.

The theatre is a registered charity and does not receive regular public funding.

Artistic director Matthew Warchus has said the theatre is in a perilous position.

Dates of the play in June and how to buy tickets, as well as other performances in the series, are due to be announced at a later date.
