Westmorland General Hospital portering team raises thousands with Three Peaks Challenge

Written by on 15/06/2021

Seven colleagues from Westmorland General Hospital have raised nearly £4,000 for Bay Hospitals Charity by completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.

Porters Simon Makin, Adrian Tallon, Katie Shaw and Carl Smith, Assistant Porter Manager Jonathan Thompson, Switchboard Operator Mark Summerfield and Porter Allocator Amy Ferguson took on the challenging 26-mile hike over Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside to raise money for the installation of a mobile sensory unit on the Children’s Ward at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Group member Katie Shaw said: “The walk went really well, although we have loads of blisters between us and are aching all over.

“Everyone managed to complete it and all the team did really well.

“So far we have managed to raise £3,800 we have still got donations coming in. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated.”

Funds raised by the team will be donated to Bay Hospitals Charity, which funds the latest equipment for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to help make patients more comfortable and ensure they get the best possible care and treatment.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive Aaron Cummins said: “Congratulations to the team for completing this challenge. I’m sure the blisters will be worth it when they see the good that will be done with the money they have raised.

“It makes me really happy to see a team of colleagues and friends get together and put in such an amazing effort on behalf of our patients.”
