Sunset trips return after pandemic disruption

Lake District visitors have the chance to enjoy evening cruises at sunset on Windermere for the first time in almost three years as the popular sailings are re-introduced by Windermere Lake Cruises.
The Evening Cruise, timed to catch the setting sun, last operated in the summer of 2019. But the Covid pandemic saw sailings halted in both 2020 and 2021.
They restart on Friday, May 27 in time for the half term school holidays and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Jennifer Cormack, Sales and Marketing Director at Windermere Lake Cruises says: “We are delighted to re-introduce the evening cruise as we know it has been badly missed by many visitors.
“There is something really special about sailing on Windermere as the sun sets behind the Lakeland hills and we hope many visitors to the Lake District this summer will get to experience that once again.”
The evening cruise has been unavailable over the last two summers because of disruption caused by the Covid pandemic and lockdowns. The last time it took place was in August 2019.The sailings are perfectly timed to catch the sun setting behind the Lake District fells when the waters of England’s longest lake are bathed in glowing colours.
“The wonderful thing about cruising on Windermere is the view is never the same,” says Jennifer Cormack. “It changes both through the seasons and throughout the day. The light and colour can alter from hour to hour and that becomes really apparent when the sun is setting. It’s a magical time to be on the water.”
The evening cruise runs through the summer months with departure times varying depending on the time of year to coincide with the sun setting.
• It re-starts at 2015 on Friday, May 27 and runs every day until Sunday, June 5.
• From June 10 to July 17 it operates every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
• From Friday July 22 to September 4 it runs every evening.
