South Cumbria drug dealer sentenced to almost 5 years in prison

Written by on 14/11/2017

A South Cumbrian dealer who laundered almost £45,000 in drugs money to Spain has been sent to prison.

John Mayes, 51, of Greendales, Allithwaite, was sentenced to 57 months in prison at Preston Crown Court on Thursday (November 9th).

He had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs (cocaine) and money laundering.

Mayes’ was driving a 4×4 vehicle on Rawlinson Street, Barrow, when officers stopped him on June 11th of this year.

Searches of Mayes, the vehicle, and his house, were carried out and police seized 42 clear plastic bags containing white powder.

This was later confirmed to be over £1,000 worth of cocaine.

Officers also carried out financial enquiries and found Mayes to have deposited £44,670 in cash to his bank account between January 2015 and October 2016.

Most of this was withdrawn in Spain and police believed this to be related to his drug supply activity.

A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: “I am pleased that Mayes is now behind bars where he can no longer harm our communities with his criminality. Our investigation showed that he was clearly making a significant amount of money from his supplying, and we will now seek to reclaim this through the Proceeds of Crime Act.

“Cumbria Constabulary will not tolerate drug dealing. We will seek to find those involved and bring them before the courts where justice will be served.”
