Remembrance Sunday

Written by on 25/09/2018

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War 1. In addition, Remembrance Day and Sunday both fall on the same day.

To mark this occasion Kendal Town Council and the Kendal branch of the Royal British Legion have decided to alter the arrangements for this year. We believe it is appropriate to mark this occasion by having the wreath laying, silence at 11am and service all at the War Memorial in Market Place. In addition, it enables us to also lay wreaths beforehand at the K Shoes War Memorial and Romney Gardens War Memorial. As a result, this year there will not be a parade or morning service atKendal Parish Church.

The programme for Sunday 11th November is as follows:

9:00am – Wreath laying at K Shoes war memorial

9:30am – Wreath laying at Romney Gardens war memorial

10:15am – Muster to start thereafter the service and wreath laying at the War Memorial, Market Place

11:00am Last Post and 2-minute silence

11:20amThe event is expected to finish.

Burneside Brass Band will be playing in Market Place from 10am.

There will be a further service at the Parish Church at 6.00pm on Remembrance Sunday to mark the centenary of the Armistice. This will include the Town Crier giving a special proclamation and the ringing of the church bells as part of the Battle’s Over National Tribute. It will also include the laying of special Thank You wreaths and a field of Remembrance poppy crosses.

In addition, Kendal Town Council are holding an Armistice Exhibition. This will be held in the Romney Room, Kendal Town Hall from Saturday 10th – Wednesday 14thNovember. The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Guy Tirvengadum at 10am on Saturday 10th November. Opening times for the exhibition are as follows:

Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th, Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th November 10am – 4pm.

Wednesday 14th November – 10am-1pm.

The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Guy Tirvengadum said Lots of people lost their lives in the wars, including many Kendalians. It is important that we never forget what they did so that we can have a better future. The Remembrance Sunday event is an ideal opportunity for us to come together and remember.

The Reverend Rob Saner-Haigh, Vicar of Kendal Parish Church said “It is especially fitting on this particular Remembrance Sunday for our whole community to gather at the War Memorial to mark the centenary of the end of World War 1. It is important for us to pause, remember and give thanks, and also to commit ourselves once again to seeking peace and building a better world for all.”
