Park improvement work begins

Twelve trees have been planted as part of a project to improve and enhance a popular Kendal park.
The Friends of Fletcher Park raised £1,300 to help re-establish woodland which had been lost to disease and storm damage.
The tree planting coincided with a day of clearing-up and hedge repairing.
Kelly Anderson, Secretary of the Friends of Fletcher Park, said: “A recent public consultation has shown that people really want to keep the tranquility and beauty but improve the appearance of the park.
“Tree planting marks the start of work which will re-establish the edges of the park and create an area of biodiversity with fruiting trees and an informal orchard.”
South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) helped to select the trees and will maintain them.
Three local SLDC ward councillors have shown their support for the park improvements. Cllr Eamonn Hennessey and Cllr Rachel Hogg both pledged £250 from their individual locality budgets and Cllr Helen Ladhams took part in the tidy-up event.
Kendal Town Council donated £300 towards the cost of the new trees.
During a three week public consultation residents were invited to visit the park in Sunnyside to see plans and make comments.
Richard Forsyth, Chairman of the Friends of Fletcher Park, said: “We received a wide range of opinions on how the park can be improved and sustained for recreational use by as many people as possible.”
