Mayor-elect launches platinum jubilee competitions

Written by on 26/04/2022

Young people across the Lancaster district are being asked to channel their creativity and enter one of two competitions to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

The Mayor-elect of Lancaster, Councillor Joyce Pritchard, is asking children aged up to 11 to design and make a crown that’s fit for royalty. It should be as adventurous as possible and can use any materials, so provides the opportunity to really show off.

Meanwhile, youngsters aged 11-16 are being asked to think about what a future royal carriage could look like and design and draw one that’s fit for the 21st century. It should include sustainable elements such as the use of alternative fuels and technologies. Entries should be no more than A3 in size but can be drawn by hand or using a computer.

Councillor Joyce Pritchard said: “I’m excited that one of the first tasks in my mayoral year will be to choose the winners of these two competitions. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the young people of our district come up with to celebrate this very special occasion.”

The winners of each competition will be invited for a tour of Lancaster Town Hall and to meet the mayor, when they will also be presented with prizes for their efforts.

Entries for the royal crown competition can be dropped off at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre or any of the mobile community hub events, details of which can be found on the council’s website at Lancaster.gov.uk/community-hub.

Entries for the royal carriage competition should be emailed to mayor@lancaster.gov.uk or sent by post to: Royal carriage competition, Mayor’s Office, Lancaster Town Hall, LA1 1PJ.

The deadline to enter both competitions is 5pm on Friday May 20.
